Remnants

Continuing to work with my own stocks of yarns, fabrics and collected offcuts – both from the weaving and my own making processes has led to a new collection of sculptural, decorative pieces to accompany my existing ranges of accessories.

Remnants are a series of textile sculptures, so named as these are literally made from remnants from the weaving of our Milnsbridge cloth but they are also remnants of something bigger too - the mill itself and its owner are sadly no longer there.

The spirals of colour are a visual record of time spent collecting and sorting yarns and the process of weaving itself. They replicate the appearance of the finished lengths of cloth wound round the beam – you can see the individual rings of colour, a little like a slice from a tree trunk.

The spirals are contained within solid rings of fabric and yarn, made using techniques I use for making my bags and key rings. The rings contain the spirals and add permanence to what was only ever a passing moment in time.

Using these materials has been hugely satisfying as they don’t really have a practical use as such but still hold a lot of memory, meaning and beauty.
